Some people have the most unique holiday gift ideas. They might not have asked you what’s on your list or know exactly what you want, but somehow their present is something you can use. You may never have thought of buying it for yourself, but now that it’s yours you wonder how you ever lived without it.
Maybe you received something to spruce up your yard—a sun dial, a bird house, wind chimes, a window box or a hammock. Perhaps the gift you received was handmade. Whether it was a crocheted potholder, doily or afghan, a homemade wooden jewelry box, decorative wall shelf, or picture frame, or a handmade set of earrings, wall painting, or a special holiday decoration—you’ll cherish it forever just because someone spent the time to make it especially for you.
Other unique gifts can be of a more personal nature. This includes an album full of pictures, complete with captions and other scrapbooking art. It could also include a new sweatshirt from your best friend’s alma mater to replace the one you know he burned at a cookout last year. Or it might be a coupon for a visit to a day spa. For these gifts the person would have to know you very well and be generous with their time and/or money.
Maybe you know of a family who lost all of their holiday decorations in a move. Why not give them an early holiday gift that they can use right away? Some people might scoff at giving tree ornaments as a holiday gift. Don’t discount this totally—you could begin a tradition of giving a newly married couple a special ornament each year. Or, perhaps an older couple you know might appreciate an ornament from a certain collection to which you can add one each year.
Speaking of collections, most people have them and are happy to add to them via gifts. Books are a common type of collection. If your best friend is a fan of a certain author and is waiting for the newest sequel, tell her not to buy it—that you want to buy it for her as a gift. She’ll be pleased and might even spend the money she saved on something else she will really use.
Other people might collect ceramic frogs, stuffed animals or antiques. Giving them an item you ran across on your cross country trip last summer will ensure them that you think of them year round. And, if it’s from out-of-state, chances are they might not have that particular one yet.
Some gifts can be not only unique, but practical as well. For example you can buy gift set in Singapore, that a whole family will love. In this category would fall a new set of towels for a friend who just redecorated her bathroom, a subscription to a magazine dedicated to parents for someone who just had their first child, or a lawn mower for someone who just moved from an apartment to a house.
